Swimming pools and spas are being used by an ever-increasing number of rehabilitation/therapy clinics and hospitals in addition to the tremendous growth of health and fitness clubs. The benefits and acceptance of low-impact water therapy for physical rehabilitation, exercise and relaxation have grown dramatically. Hotels and apartment complexes use pools as a major attraction for their facilities. Because of these benefits, pools and spas can be a major source of revenue. It is not an easy task to keep the water clear, safe and enjoyable for the patients, customers and employees without high levels of potentially dangerous chemicals, which ironically are the primary cause of the problems. Heavy chemical odors generated from indoor pools and spas can present health complications for patients, customers and employees. The heavy chemical vapors are also highly corrosive to the equipment and ventilation system for the building itself.

Natural Water Environments and the H.R.G. System are changing how swimming pools and spas are sanitized by using a non-toxic process that forms a powerful sanitizer/oxidizer from the hydrogen and oxygen in the water itself. The process is very complex, but the concept is really quite simple. Water, H₂O, has all the ingredients required to become a powerful sanitizing agent. Although water is neutral in its normal H₂O form, once separated into its key elemental components, it forms one of the most effective Sanitizers/Oxidizers known to man.. Hydroxyl Radicals. The synergy established between the system and chlorine or bromine in a commercial pool and spa is startling. Independent water laboratory analysis of a therapy rehabilitation pool and spa with a system showed bacteria counts 87 percent lower than with much higher levels of chlorine alone in the same facility.

Another study of a large, approximately 150,000-gallon outdoor facility where only half of the pool was treated with the system while the other half was treated with chlorine alone documented even more dramatic results. For four straight weeks, there were zero bacteria levels present in the hydroxyl radical/chlorine section of the pool. The other half of the pool treated with chlorine alone at 1-2 ppm documented bacteria levels that ranged from high during the first test to moderate in the fourth weekly test. The H.R.G. System destroys combined chlorine and bromine on contact and kills bacteria that have grown resistant to chlorine and bromine.

At All Saints Hospital, the system was placed on the Carter Rehabilitation Center’s 45,000-gallon indoor pool. During the first eight months, the system cut chemical operating costs in excess of 50 percent, while dramatically reducing the chlorine odor, which had been a major source of complaints. The H.R.G. System allowed the pool to be operated at a much lower chlorine level than previously possible, with dramatically less shocking.

The H.R.G. System is added to the existing equipment (pump, filter and heater). The energy field, which causes the reaction, is established by passing a low-voltage DC current to a specially designed chamber with non-metallic electrodes. As water (H₂O) reacts in the chamber, the water molecule is transformed into free liberated hydrogen and oxygen radicals which immediately recombine to form hydroxyl radicals, 02 and hydrogen peroxide. As the radical oxygen and hydroxyl radicals are produced, disinfecting and oxidation occur.

Do not confuse this technology with older, less effective systems such as ozone or copper ionization. Ozone produces 03, which has a potentially dangerous off-gassing aspect, and is corrosive to metals and other surfaces. Ozone is also very expensive to operate and maintain. The H.R.G. System is three to four times stronger than ozone in its ability to kill bacteria, with none of the negative side effects. Copper ionization has a much slower bacteria kill rate and has a high risk of staining pool surfaces. Copper is not an oxidizer and should be chelated which requires other expensive chemicals. The Natural Water Environment's system is less expensive to install and much cheaper to operate and maintain. Best of all, the system takes over the bulk of the sanitizing load and breaks down combined chlorine and bromine on contact, which eliminates the chemical-associated complaints from patients, customers and employees.
